Hailed by the Boston Globe for his “dazzling, clarion brightness with elegant edges” and in the Boston Musical Intelligencer for “virtuosity and musicality that was simply stunning”, trumpeter Terry Everson is an internationally renowned soloist. Winner of the inaugural Ellsworth Smith Competition, Mr. Everson has premiered several major solo works, and is featured in many CD releases as Principal Trumpet of the Boston Modern Orchestra Project. He is also Principal Trumpet of the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra and the Peninsula Music Festival. He’ll bring his clarion tones to Purcell’s Sonata for Trumpet and Strings.
We dedicate Tchaikovsky’s poignant Elegy to the memory of Harlan Lane, a dear friend and long-time supporter of COB who passed away this year. Arensky wrote his beautiful Variations on a Theme of Tchaikovsky, as a tribute to the composer the year after his death. Rachmaninoff’s lush Romance and Scherzo caps off this trio of Russian works.
We close our program with the Boston Premiere of David Feltner’s Dreams and Awakenings. In Dreams, fragmented memories of bugle themes pierce the night, drifting in and out of consciousness. In Awakenings the trumpet plays joyous bugle-inspired themes, while the strings imitate the trumpet with much dancing and rejoicing. A fitting way to celebrate our 20th Season!
