Carlos Simon An Elegy: A Cry from the Grave
Dinuk Wijeratne Two Pop Songs on Antique Poems
Franz Schubert Death and the Maiden
About the Program
Love, loss, death, and the life beyond. These are universal themes that have led artists to reflect and inspired them to some of their most personal expressions.
Carlos Simon writes that his Elegy, composed in 2015 “is an artistic reflection dedicated to those who have been murdered wrongfully by an oppressive power; namely Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner and Michael Brown.”
Dinuk Wijeratne used two ancient poems (“A letter from the After-life” and “I will not let thee go”) as a point of departure for his otherworldly music.
Schubert used his song “Death and the Maiden” with its ambiguous view of Death as both terrifying and consoling, as the basis for this masterpiece.
